3 Counties Trophy at Morley Hayes Golf Club

3 Counties Trophy at Morley Hayes Golf Club

7th August 2019

This year the triangular match between Leicestershire & Rutland, Cambridgeshire and Derbyshire was held at Morley Hayes Golf Club on Wednesday 7th August. This is a new venue for the Derbyshire Society as the Morley Hayes Club has only recently joined Derbyshire County Golf Ltd.
The facilities proved excellent and we were well looked after by the attentive staff. The poor weather of the last week or so was not repeated and apart from a sharp shower whilst members were arriving for lunch we enjoyed a sunny afternoon.
It was obvious that our visitors had thoroughly enjoyed themselves from the banter that took place on the roof terrace whilst enjoying a drink together as they waited to sit down for dinner.
Mike Whalley the Derbyshire President welcomed members of the visiting Societies and remarked on the camaraderie which developed through these matches. He thanked the Society Secretaries who bore the brunt of the administrate duties to ensure these type of days went without a hitch.
The Derbyshire Vice Captain Bob Roberts deputising for Captain Derek Northin who had sent his apologies for his inability to be present on this occasion then announced the results. Leicestershire & Rutland achieved a convincing win to retain the salver with 333 points from the best 10 scores. Derbyshire finished in second place with 311 points and Cambridge carded 295.
Only two players John Delaney and John Rawlings x2 achieved 2’s and they received sleeves of golf balls. In receiving the Salver John Carruthers President of the Leicestershire & Rutland Society thanked Derbyshire for their organisation of the event and thought the venue had been excellent.
John Fuller Captain of Cambridgeshire whilst reiterating previous comments thanked all the players who had competed and made the day such a success and although his County had not won the Salver he was pleased to see that his Secretary Stuart Watson had carded the excellent score of 34 to be equal 2nd individually. He went on to say that it was Cambridge’s turn to organise the event in 2020 and told all present to put the 6th August in their diaries. Full details of the results are attached to this report.
