Captains Day at Bakewell Golf Club

Captains Day at Bakewell Golf Club

2 October 2019

Despite the atrocious weather conditions over the last few days the decision was made on Monday to go ahead and risk holding Captains Day at Bakewell Golf Club on Wednesday the 2nd October.
A very courageous and valiant judgement when it had been necessary to cancel the original event scheduled to take place on the 31st July because the course was completely unplayable following very heavy overnight rain. Derek was rewarded with excellent golfing conditions and 60 members competed in glorious sunshine all day with very little wind. The scores reflected the good conditions and 80% of the cards were returned with 35 or more points.
The Winners of the 4 B.B.B. stableford competition were Gordon Paterson and Michael Cockerton on 44 points closely followed by Keith Potter and his partner David Brock on 43 points both pairs from the host Club. In third place were Chesterfield pair Paul Bywater and Roger Thorley who just edged out Paul Robinson of Ormonde Fields and Colin Barnard of Sherwood Forest by one point on countback to the last 3 holes both teams having amassed 42 points overall.
There were 2 nearest the pin prizes the first for two shots on the 15th and the other one shot on the 18th. Keith Potter of Bakewell and Roger Hanks of Mickleover being the winners.
6 players managed 2’s – Phil Anderson, Richard Burley, Alan Bramley, Peter Blair Roger Hanks and Roger Thorley. John Salt had kindly donated a 4 ball round at Horsley Lodge Golf Club and Tony Gee and Ian Hopkins were the successful players to win the draw.
Because Bakewell is a 9 hole course it was necessary to spread play over a longer period than is usual and the morning players were no longer present when the results were announced. Those winning 3rd Prize Paul Bywater and Roger Thorley thanked the Society for organising the day and complimented the Club on presentation of the course. Captain Derek Northin thanked both the Secretary Peter Arnold and Treasurer Martin Eyre for their work in organising the day. He also invited applause to thank the Caterer for the excellent food and the green staff for such a well presented course. He also thanked the members for their support.
During the afternoon whilst play was in progress the Captain presented a cheque for £ 500.00 to Peter Corbett of the Derbyshire Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance Service. In his response Peter said that our donation would provide fuel for 500 miles of helicopter flight.
