Founders Trophy at Mickleover Golf Club

Founders Trophy at Mickleover Golf Club

23 July

The Society returned to Mickleover Golf Club on the 23rd July to play for the Founders Trophy. Only 40 members competed on one of the warmest days of the year so far. The fairways were so dry that it was necessary to allow players to lift balls that had dropped into the surface cracks because they were so wide and deep. Despite the hard dry fairways the greens were in excellent condition and a credit to the Green staff.
There was the usual 2’s competition but the only successful players were Bob Roberts of Ormonde Fields G.C. and Ken Arnold of Tapton Park G.C.
John Wright of the host Club Mickleover won a water colour of the 6th Hole where he had achieved “nearest to the pin”.
Since there were so few players who were not either Seniors or Veterans the committee decided to award 5 prizes instead of awarding separate Senior and Veteran prizes.
3rd to 5th Places were decided on count back on 7 cards all with 37 points.
5th Place going to Bob Roberts of Ormonde Fields G.C. 4th Place to Graham Finney of Mickleover G.C. and 3rd place to Paul Waring of Buxton High Peak Golf Club.
David Brown of Tapton Park with 42 points secured second place and the winner of the Founders Trophy was Malcolm Howells of Burton upon Trent G.C. with the magnificent score of 43 points.
David Jones the Immediate Past Captain of Mickleover G.C. welcomed the Society Members to his Club and expressed the hope that that had enjoyed the day. Society Captain Graham Naylor responded and thanked Mickleover for their excellent facilities and the superb food.
Malcolm Howells thanked all for making his day as he expressed surprise at his success which he had never envisaged would be possible at a Society Competition.
