The first of this year’s matches was played in superb weather conditions on a Mickleover Course which had made a miraculous recovery after being totally waterlogged a few weeks ago with streams being photographed running across fairways. Yesterday it had become so hard that green staff were watering. What a change in such a short time!
Unfortunately Norfolk were unable to field a full 20 man team and were indebted to three Derbyshire players Tony Broadhurst, Ted Harrison and David Jones who kindly agreed to make up their numbers.
Interestingly the two matches involving the Derbyshire players on loan to Norfolk ended up with one win to Derbys and one to Norfolk and the overall result of the match was a tie at 5 – 5 . Perhaps this was a fitting finish to what had proved to be an enjoyable day for all.
Derbys winners were M. Whalley & C. Ibbotson 4 &3 T. Davis & N. Armstrong 3 & 2, R. Thorley & A. Dale 4 & 2, F. McCabe & R. Gibbs 2 & 1 and R. Byrne & R. Pierrepont 3 & 1.
All enjoyed an after match dinner of Braised Lamb served with dauphinoise potatoes roast carrots & parsnips and mixed green vegetables followed by Summer Berry Fruit Crumble and Custard.
The Loyal toast was proposed by Mike Whalley President of the Derbyshire Society. Ted Harrison 2018 Captain of the host Club Mickleover welcomed both those who had made the long journey from Norfolk and also the Derbyshire players to his Club and hoped that they had enjoyed the day.
Graham Naylor Captain of the Derbyshire Society then rose and thanked all those who had helped to organise the day but claimed credit himself for organising the excellent weather that we had all enjoyed. He then invited the Derbyshire players to drink a toast to our visitors from Norfolk.
Howard Maylard Captain of the Norfolk Society responded thanking both match organisers John Rice and Peter Arnold for their help in overcoming last minute problems and ensuring full teams for both sides. He also thanked MickleoverG.C. for presenting an excellent Course and providing fine after match replenishment.
