For our first home match of the season we went to Shirland G C, which we found in a good tidy condition and even those who played badly made complimentary comments.
The weather was better than we had had for most of the week, the course was dry although maybe the greens a little slow, this all gave ideal conditions for some good golf.
As usual those who wanted lunch bought their own, mostly accompanied by a small beer.
20 members from each team played and Derbyshire recorded a win 6½ v 3½, with few matches going to the last green.
The Derbyshire winners were Derek Northin & Colin Barnard, Mike Whalley & Richard Coates, Ian Marr & Dereck Martin, Graham Naylor & Clive Ibbotson, Paul Robinson & Geoff Charlton, Terry Payne & Mick Plimmer. The half was achieved by Tony Gee & Paul Mooney after being 2 down with 2 to play.
Before dinner we all move outside for a group photograph as shown. Shirland Captain, Richard Coates, welcomed us all to his Club and said what a pleasure it had been to host the event. After a most welcome and enjoyable meal served later Sheffield Captain Terry Garvey said how much he had enjoyed the course, the golf and in particular the wine which was not normally served at their home matches. Our captain Derek was again in good form with the odd joke thrown in. All had enjoyed the day and he looked forward to playing them again next year.
