The Saunton Salver Saunton GC 2018

The Saunton Salver Saunton GC 2018

12 players from Derbyshire returned again to Saunton Golf Club, to play in what has become a regular feature of our Society golfing year. This year however, we returned as defending champions.
The weather over the two days proved to be decisive, as the wind picked up. President Mike Whalley had previously described Saunton as “not for the faint hearted”, and that is certainly true when the wind blows.
At the end of Day 1 however, Derbyshire led the field by three points on a total of 174. Could we retain the trophy?
A strong performance on Day 2 by Suffolk however meant we lost out, tying with a strong team from Devon (7 Saunton members we believe) both on 344, with Suffolk on 345. Whilst we may have been disappointed at not retaining the trophy, it was still a good performance, bearing in mind that we have been in the top 5 each year.
Congratulations to John Wright and Alan Cunningham who were in the prizes for their scores on both days, and thanks to all the players for their contributions over the course of the event.
